Beautiful and Sacred Serbia

This beautiful 13 day tour covers the Orthodox spirituality of Serbia and the Holy land of Kosovo and Metohija. You will visit numerous Monasteries and Churches dating from the 12th Century. This tour starts in Belgrade and works its way to Northern Serbia to see the beautiful Fruska Gora National Park and its Monasteries. From there you will go to the roman archaeological site called Viminacium to see the excavations. After that, travel to Western Serbia to Tara National Park and see the beauty and wonder of this pristine park. You will slowly work your way to Kosovo, on the way stopping at numerous Monasteries in both Ovac-Kablar Gorge. Expect a stop at Studenica Monastery, the heart of medieval Serbian History and a UNESCO Heritage site. The trip continues to Sopocani Monastery and then into Pec in Kosovo where you will spend 3 days exploring the heart of Serbian Orthodoxy. Return through Nis and Southeastern Serbia before you return to Belgrade.

Day 2 Fruska Gora

Sremski Karlovci is the center of Serbian culture and history during the Austro-Hugarian Empire. The first high school  in Vojvodina was founded here and still a reputable school for languages. It is also the home of the theological high school.

Krusedol Monastery is one of the 17 Monasteries located on Fruska Gora. This Monastery is dedicated to the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is considered the spiritual beacon of Fruska Gora

Day 3 Viminacium

A former Roman military camp,  this archaeological site has a fresco known as the "Mona Lisa of Viminacium." It contains remains of temples, streets, public squares, hippodromes and Roman baths. Viminacium also contains the largest number of graves discovered in any Roman archaeological site.

Day 4 Drina River Canyon and Tara National Park

Drina River is the natural border between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia. It is considered the most beautiful river in the former Yugoslavia. It has carved this beautiful canyon through the hills of Western Serbia. It is known locally as "Zelenika" due to its green color

This viewpoint is called Biljeska Stena. It is a view point from an altitude of 4020' that provides a scenic overlook of Perucac Lake and Drina River


Day 5 Zlatibor-Mokra Gora

Zlatibor, the mountain of Golden Pines, raises 4900' above the surrounding area. It is a well known destination in Serbia for vacationers for all seasons. The area is known for its natural spring water

Day 5 Sirogojno

This open-air muesum and ethno-village is well known for having the best hand knitted wool sweaters in Serbia. It displays wooden buildings and portrays life as it was in the 19th century from the Zlatibor region.

Day 6 Uvac River Canyon

Known as the Serbian Colorado, the Uvac river carved this canyon and the view from the top is breathtaking. This is also home to the Griffin Vultures, an endangered species.

Day 7 Ovcar-Kablar Gorge

Called the Mt. Athos of Serbia, there are 10 Monasteries located on these two neighboring mountains. Divided by the Morava River which has carved out a beautiful valley, it is one of the highlights of this tour.

 

Day 7-8 Studenica Monastery

Studenica Monastery is the spiritual center of medieval Serbia that was constructed in the 12th century. The Monastery is a on UNESCO World Heritage list.

Day 9 Sopocani Monastery

Sopocani Monastery was counstructed in the 13th Century. It was the center of the Serbian medieval state.  The Dormition of the Mother of God fresco is one of the famous frescoes inside this historic Monastery. It is listed on the the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Day 9  Pec  Monastery

This historic Monastery is where the seat of Serbian Orthodox Church was during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was where numerous Patriarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church were proclaimed. This Monastery is the biggest mausoleum of Serbian religions dignitaries.

Day 10 Decani Monastery

This Monastery is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Founded in the 14th century, it is considered to have the jewels of the 14th century fresco art style.

Day 11 Gazimestan

The famous battle of Kosovo on June 28th, 1389 happened in the fields of Gazimestan against the Ottoman. Since many gave their lives here to hold off the invading forces,  Gazimestan is translated into "field of heros".

Day 12 Nis

The center of Southeastern Serbia, Nis is rich in history. Included is Cele Kula, translated to Skull Tower. During a Serbian Uprising in 1809, the Ottoman forces made a tower of the skulls of all the rebels to show their dominance over the region. In total,  the 15 foot tall tower contained 952 skulls.

Day 12 Ravanica Monastery

This Monastery from the 14th century located in Eastern Serbia is a gem in the crown of Serbian history. Located here are the relics of St. Lazar of Serbia. He lead the Serbian armies at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.

Day 12 Oplenac Church

This church dedicated to St. George is the Mausoleum for the Serbian Royal Family. Located in the village of Topola this Church sits on a hill and is hidden in away in nature.
